We live in an era where a software engineer in Bangalore, a student in São Paulo, and a financial analyst in London all rely on the same fundamental resource to do their work: information. This is not a coincidence – it is the defining feature of the world we now inhabit. Sociologists, economists, and policy thinkers have given this reality a name: the knowledge society or information society. Understanding what this means, how it came about, and what it demands of us is essential to making sense of the social and economic forces shaping the 21st century.

From fields and factories to data and ideas
Human societies have passed through distinct economic phases. First came agrarian societies, where land and physical labor were the primary sources of wealth. Then came industrial societies, powered by machines, fossil fuels, and mass production. Today, many parts of the world have entered a third stage: a post-industrial or knowledge-based society, where the production, management, and exchange of information drive economic activity more than physical goods ever did.
This transition was first theorized by economist Fritz Machlup in 1962, who documented the rapid growth of “knowledge industries” – education, media, research, and communication – in the United States. He found that knowledge-producing occupations grew faster than any other sector between 1900 and 1958, already making up roughly one-third of the workforce. Sociologist Daniel Bell built on this to develop his concept of “post-industrial society,” which he later reframed as the information society – a society where theoretical knowledge, not physical labor, becomes the central resource and driver of progress.
Defining the knowledge/information society
The terms knowledge society and information society are closely related but carry a subtle distinction. According to Wikipedia’s entry on knowledge societies, an information society primarily creates and disseminates raw data, while a knowledge society goes a step further – it transforms that information into resources that allow people to take effective action. In other words, information alone is not knowledge. Knowledge requires reflection, critical thinking, and the capacity to generate meaning from data.
That said, both terms are widely used together in sociology and policy circles to describe the same general phenomenon: a society in which the production, distribution, and application of information have become the dominant economic and social forces. The UNESCO World Report Towards Knowledge Societies frames this as not just a technological transformation, but a social one – involving new forms of power, new inequalities, and new possibilities for human development.
Key characteristics
Scholars have identified several defining features of knowledge/information societies. Encyclopedia.com’s overview of knowledge societies outlines these clearly: the mass production and application of knowledge is dominant; the price of most commodities is determined by the intellectual input required to develop them rather than by raw materials; a large portion of the population attains higher education; a vast majority have access to ICTs and the internet; and knowledge workers – those who require high levels of education and expertise – make up a significant share of the labor force. Both individuals and governments invest heavily in education and research, and organizations face continuous pressure to innovate.
These features collectively mark a break from earlier economic models. Value no longer resides primarily in land, machinery, or manual labor – it resides in intellectual capital: ideas, expertise, data, and the ability to process and apply all three.
The role of ICTs in driving the shift
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) – the internet, mobile devices, cloud computing, artificial intelligence – are the infrastructure that makes the knowledge society possible. They dramatically accelerate how information is created, stored, and shared. As Wikipedia notes in its entry on information society, sociologists like Manuel Castells, Anthony Giddens, and Ulrich Beck argue that since the 1970s, information technology has functioned as the catalyst for a global transformation comparable to what steam power did for industrial society.
The impact of ICTs on economic productivity is substantial. Research published in the Annals of Operations Research examining 24 OECD countries from 1995 to 2019 found that ICT capital change was among the most significant contributors to improvements in labor productivity over that period. Firms use ICTs to organize transnational networks, reduce transaction costs, process information faster, and generate new knowledge – all of which feed back into economic growth.
ICTs and changes in the labor market
One of the most significant social impacts of ICTs is the restructuring of labor markets. Research on ICT and labor market development shows that ICTs transform employment by changing the content and nature of work, restructuring workplace organization, and generating strong demand for a highly skilled, knowledge-intensive workforce. Fields such as management, law, finance, education, health care, media, and marketing have all become more information-intensive, requiring workers who can gather, analyze, and apply data.
This has produced what Daniel Bell called the rise of the knowledge worker – a professional whose primary tool is cognitive skill rather than physical labor. However, this shift is not without tension. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that while new technologies increase the value of workers in specialized knowledge roles, productivity gains from ICT can be unevenly distributed across skill levels – raising wages and opportunities for some while creating pressure on those in lower-skilled or routine jobs to adapt or risk economic displacement.
Sociologist Manuel Castells described this divide starkly, distinguishing between self-programmable labor – workers who can continuously acquire new skills and adapt – and generic labor, which is more easily replaced or automated. This polarization is one of the key sociological tensions within knowledge societies.
The commodification of information
Perhaps the most defining and contested feature of the knowledge society is the commodification of information – the process by which information itself becomes an economic asset that can be bought, sold, owned, and traded. This represents a fundamental shift from earlier economies, where value was embedded in physical goods.
Today, data is among the most valuable resources in the world. Platforms like Google, Meta, and Amazon are built not primarily on physical infrastructure but on the collection, analysis, and monetization of user data and behavioral information. ScienceDirect’s overview of information society observes that information society places a high premium on the freedom to create, acquire, transmit, and use information – but also acknowledges that this comes with significant risks including misinformation, privacy violations, and growing dependency on digital systems.
The commodification of information raises important questions about ownership and control. When personal data becomes a commercial resource, who benefits? As information is increasingly treated as intellectual property – through patents, copyrights, paywalls, and licensing agreements – access becomes conditional on the ability to pay. This has direct implications for equity, particularly for people and communities with fewer economic resources.
Access, equity, and the digital divide
The promise of the knowledge society – that information is a public good available to all – runs directly into the reality of the digital divide. UNESCO’s Inclusive Policy Lab identifies the digital divide as a critical source of inequality, one that exacerbates existing disadvantages in education, employment, healthcare, and civic participation, particularly in underserved communities worldwide.
The scale of this divide is significant. A 2025 UNESCO report on digital equity found that approximately 2.6 billion people still lack access to fast internet – meaning roughly one-third of humanity remains outside the information infrastructure that defines the knowledge society. And even among those with some form of connectivity, quality and speed vary enormously by income level, geography, and gender.
This matters because in a knowledge society, access to information is not just a convenience – it is a prerequisite for economic and social participation. Those without reliable internet access, digital literacy skills, or devices cannot compete in knowledge-intensive labor markets, access online education, or engage with digital public services. The digital divide thus functions as a mechanism of social stratification, replicating and deepening existing inequalities along lines of class, geography, and gender.
Is information the same as knowledge?
A critical insight from sociology is that the sheer volume of information available does not automatically produce knowledge or wisdom. As the knowledge society literature emphasizes, knowledge creation requires active reflection, critical thinking, and contextual understanding. Without these, information can become what some scholars call non-knowledge – data that is false, misleading, or stripped of meaning. The explosion of misinformation, disinformation, and information overload in the digital age is a direct expression of this problem.
This is why many sociologists prefer the term “knowledge society” over “information society.” The distinction matters: building a genuinely knowledge-based society requires not just access to data, but robust systems of education, critical thinking, and public trust in expertise. Researchers in the journal Economics & Sociology describe this challenge as a shift from a “situation of information shortage” to one of “information excess” – where the real problem is no longer finding information, but evaluating and making sense of it.
Theoretical perspectives on the knowledge society
The knowledge society concept has attracted contributions from multiple theoretical traditions. Oxford Reference identifies six distinct approaches to defining the information society: technological (focusing on ICT expansion), economic (measuring the information sector’s share of GDP), occupational (tracking the rise of knowledge workers), spatial (mapping information flows across networks), cultural (examining the proliferation of signs and symbols), and theoretical (centering the role of abstract knowledge in all social domains).
Each approach captures something real. But critics from within sociology caution against overly technology-centric framings. As noted in the Encyclopedia.com entry on knowledge society, technology is effectively useless “hardware” without the “software” of human knowledge, creativity, and critical judgment. The network can carry information – but it is people, institutions, and social structures that determine whether that information becomes knowledge, innovation, or social change.
