Few organizations have shaped global environmental discourse as profoundly as Greenpeace. Since its founding in 1971, the organization has built a reputation not just for dramatic protest actions, but for running sustained, evidence-based campaigns that push governments, corporations, and the public toward meaningful environmental change. From its origins as a small anti-nuclear group, Greenpeace has grown into a global force with offices in more than 55 countries. What makes its work distinctive is the breadth of its focus – climate change, ocean conservation, forest protection, genetic engineering, and toxic chemicals – and its ability to translate scientific concern into public and policy action.

A multi-front environmental campaign

Greenpeace does not concentrate on a single issue. Its approach is to identify the most critical environmental threats of the time and pursue them through direct action, public advocacy, corporate pressure, and policy lobbying – often simultaneously. This multi-front strategy allows the organization to keep several urgent conversations alive at once, while creating cumulative pressure that makes it harder for industries and governments to ignore.

At its core, Greenpeace challenges the power of fossil fuel corporations while bolstering support for renewable and citizen-powered energy alternatives. This dual strategy – pushing back against what exists while championing what could replace it – defines much of its campaigning logic.

Climate change: targeting coal and championing renewables

Climate change sits at the center of Greenpeace’s global agenda. The organization has long recognized coal as one of the most damaging fossil fuels in operation, and its campaigns against coal power plants have taken place across New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, Svalbard, and beyond. Using direct action, Greenpeace members have occupied coal plants, blocked coal shipments, and disrupted mining operations to force public attention onto their environmental cost.

The climate cost of coal is well-documented. Fine particulate air pollution from coal is estimated to have caused approximately 460,000 deaths in the United States alone between 1999 and 2020, making the case for phaseout not only environmental but deeply public health-oriented. Greenpeace has consistently used such data to ground its protests in evidence.

On the renewables side, Greenpeace has pushed corporations and governments to commit to 100% clean energy. In China, Greenpeace targeted tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent, pressuring them to switch to clean power – which they eventually did, while also beginning to promote themselves as renewable energy champions. This generated industry-wide peer pressure that extended well beyond the original campaign targets. More recently, ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, committed to 100% renewable energy by 2030 after sustained Greenpeace pressure.

The “Energy [R]evolution” vision

Together with the European Renewable Energy Council, Greenpeace formulated a global energy scenario called “Energy [R]evolution”, which envisions 80% of the world’s total energy being produced through renewables by 2050, with energy sector emissions reduced by more than 80% compared to 1990 levels. This kind of long-term, science-backed planning gives Greenpeace’s climate advocacy credibility beyond protest – it offers a concrete alternative.

Ocean conservation: confronting overfishing and deep-sea threats

The world’s oceans are under pressure from multiple directions – industrial fishing, plastic pollution, climate change, and the emerging threat of deep-sea mining. Greenpeace has made ocean protection a central pillar of its work, recognizing that marine ecosystems underpin global food security and biodiversity.

Overfishing is one of the most severe threats Greenpeace campaigns against. In Taiwan, a Greenpeace ocean campaign exposed more than 300 Taiwanese-owned or operated fishing vessels registered in foreign countries to evade domestic regulation, revealing serious loopholes in fisheries management. The campaign also drew attention to shortcomings in the government’s distant-water fishery policies – pushing for accountability in an industry that often operates beyond the reach of national laws.

The organization has also tackled illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which Greenpeace describes as a top threat to ocean ecosystems and global food security, one inextricably linked to human rights abuses at sea. Its “Save the Arctic” campaign stands as one of its most high-profile ocean protection efforts – fighting against oil drilling in the Arctic that posed severe threats to marine life. Through direct interventions on drilling rigs and international advocacy, Greenpeace helped push for a global ocean treaty, a milestone that recently saw more than sixty governments ratify protections for international waters.

Forest protection: from the Amazon to Indonesia

Forests are among the planet’s most effective natural tools for stabilizing the climate, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining the livelihoods of Indigenous communities. Yet they are disappearing at alarming rates. From the Amazon to Canada to Indonesia, half of the world’s global forests have already been lost to unsustainable industrial practices, displacing communities, threatening endangered species, and releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Industrial agriculture contributes to an estimated 80% of deforestation globally, and Greenpeace has consistently targeted the industries and companies behind it – from cattle ranching to palm oil production. In West Papua, Indonesia, Greenpeace successfully won the revocation of 14 oil palm plantation permits, saving a forested area larger than Luxembourg from clearance.

In the Congo Basin – the world’s second-largest rainforest – Greenpeace allied with international rainforest foundations to urge the Democratic Republic of Congo to maintain its logging ban, warning that lifting it would represent a crisis for both human rights and the global climate. In China, Greenpeace campaigns pushed major home furnishing retailers like B&Q to commit that all wood products sold in China would come from certified, legally and responsibly managed forests.

Greenpeace’s forest work consistently links deforestation to climate change, making the case that ending forest destruction is not just about protecting trees – it is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to slow global warming.

Opposition to genetic engineering: a precautionary stance

Greenpeace’s position on genetically engineered (GE) organisms is among its most debated. The organization has raised concerns that GE organisms can spread through nature and interbreed with natural organisms, potentially contaminating non-GE environments in unforeseeable and uncontrollable ways. From this precautionary standpoint, it has campaigned for moratoria on GMO releases until thorough safety testing can be conducted.

Greenpeace first engaged with genetic engineering as an issue in 1992, initially as part of pesticide campaigning. The concern was that introducing GE crops could have unpredictable ecosystem consequences – from the development of herbicide-resistant “superweeds” to the disruption of biodiversity. In 1997, Greenpeace joined more than 30 organic farming organizations in petitioning the U.S. EPA to cancel its approval of Bt crops, arguing that the risks of biological pollution had not been adequately assessed.

It is worth noting that Greenpeace’s GMO stance is contested. In 2016, more than 107 Nobel laureates signed an open letter urging Greenpeace to end its opposition to genetically modified organisms, citing scientific consensus on their safety. Greenpeace has maintained its position, emphasizing the importance of ecological agriculture and the precautionary principle over what it sees as premature commercialization.

The fight against toxic chemicals

Greenpeace has long treated chemical pollution as a systemic problem – one embedded in industrial production, consumer goods, and global supply chains. In 2011, Greenpeace released its “Dirty Laundry” report, accusing several of the world’s top fashion and sportswear brands of releasing toxic waste into China’s rivers. The report identified hazardous hormone-disrupting chemicals – including alkylphenols and perfluorinated compounds – in wastewater from textile facilities with commercial ties to major brands like Nike, Adidas, H&M, and others.

This campaign evolved into the “Detox Fashion” initiative, which successfully pressured global clothing brands to commit to eliminating hazardous chemicals from their supply chains. The campaign led to commitments from several major brands to phase out nonylphenol ethoxylates and adopt zero-discharge policies, bringing systemic change to an industry that had long operated without transparency on chemical use.

Greenpeace has also tackled toxic chemicals in electronics. Beginning in 2006, Greenpeace published its “Guide to Greener Electronics,” ranking major manufacturers on their use of toxic materials and e-waste practices. Over time, this ranking system drove measurable improvements – companies that were publicly ranked began eliminating hazardous substances from their products and improving recycling schemes.

How Greenpeace mobilizes public and policy action

Across all its campaigns, Greenpeace uses a consistent toolkit: high-visibility direct action, investigative research, corporate pressure, and grassroots mobilization. Activists have climbed coal plant smokestacks to unfurl banners, boarded oil platforms in the Arctic, and blocked ships carrying harmful cargo – all designed to generate media coverage that keeps environmental issues visible when they might otherwise be ignored.

But direct action is only part of the picture. Greenpeace also invests heavily in policy advocacy. In Hong Kong, months of lobbying by Greenpeace led the Legislative Council to pass a motion tightening controls over food pesticide residues. In China, a Greenpeace report exposing nonylphenol contamination in Yangtze River fish contributed to the government adding the chemical to its list of severely restricted substances. These policy wins demonstrate that Greenpeace’s influence operates on multiple levels – public, corporate, and governmental.

Greenpeace also understands the power of public mobilization. In Auckland in 2003, an estimated 35,000 people marched to call for an extension of a GE moratorium following sustained Greenpeace campaigning. Numbers like these signal to governments that environmental concerns carry genuine electoral weight. At COP30 in Belém, tens of thousands took to the streets demanding action on fossil fuels and forests, reflecting the continued energy Greenpeace and allied movements generate around global climate negotiations.

Challenges and ongoing relevance

Greenpeace does not operate without controversy. Its tactics have drawn criticism from governments, corporations, and even some scientists. Its GMO stance has been challenged by researchers who argue the organization prioritizes ideology over scientific consensus. Its methods – from property disruption to confronting law enforcement – have led to legal challenges in multiple countries.

Yet its record of tangible outcomes – from the Paris Agreement to forest protection victories to corporate commitments on toxic chemicals – suggests that its model of combining scientific research with confrontational advocacy and mass mobilization continues to produce results. The urgency of protecting remaining forests, ocean sanctuaries, and clean air has only intensified, and Greenpeace remains one of the most consistent forces ensuring these issues stay on the global agenda.
