Every social science research project begins with a fundamental decision: how will you investigate the problem? The tools and approaches you choose – your methodology and your methods – shape everything that follows, from what data you gather to how you interpret and present it. Whether you are preparing for an academic research project or simply trying to understand how social science knowledge is produced, getting a clear picture of these core concepts is essential. This post revisits the major pillars of social science research: qualitative methodology, quantitative methodology, survey methods, and how to present your findings – all aimed at preparing you for practical, applied research work.

Methodology vs. method: knowing the difference

Before diving into specific approaches, it helps to clarify two terms that are often confused. A methodology is the broader philosophical framework guiding your research – it reflects your assumptions about what knowledge is and how it can be obtained. A method, by contrast, is the specific technique you use to collect or analyze data, such as an interview, a questionnaire, or a statistical test. Think of methodology as the strategy and method as the tactic. Both must align with your research question for a study to be credible and coherent. As researchers at the National Institutes of Health note, every research study must address both an ontological question (what is the nature of the reality being studied?) and an epistemological question (how can that reality be known?) – and together these shape the appropriate methodology for any inquiry.

Qualitative research methodology

Qualitative research methods rely on non-statistical, non-numerical forms of data collection, analysis, and evidence production. Rather than measuring variables, this approach seeks to understand the meaning, context, and lived experience behind social phenomena. It answers the “how” and “why” questions that numbers alone cannot capture.

In social sciences, qualitative research has a long history rooted in anthropology and sociology. The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) identifies several widely-used qualitative methodologies, including semi-structured interviews, unstructured interviews, focus groups, participant observation, ethnography, and researcher diaries. Each offers a different kind of access to social reality.

Core qualitative approaches

Ethnography involves the researcher being directly immersed in the participants’ environment to produce a comprehensive account of social phenomena from the inside. Phenomenology focuses on understanding individuals’ lived experiences of a particular event or condition. Grounded theory builds theoretical explanations directly from the data, rather than testing pre-existing theories. Case study research examines specific instances – individuals, groups, institutions, or events – in depth. According to StatPearls, qualitative research is particularly effective for exploring poorly understood subjects, irrational or emotional phenomena, and complex social realities that cannot be reduced to numbers.

Strengths and limitations

Qualitative research excels at producing rich, contextually nuanced findings. It is especially valuable for studying how social experience is created and given meaning, and for investigating sensitive topics like mental health, family dynamics, or cultural practices. However, it also has well-documented limitations: findings are not easily generalizable to larger populations, results can vary depending on the researcher’s perspective, and data collection is typically time-consuming and resource-intensive.

Quantitative research methodology

Quantitative research is grounded in positivist principles – the idea that social reality can be measured objectively and analyzed using statistical methods. It focuses on numerical data, measurable variables, and the identification of patterns, correlations, and causal relationships across large samples. This methodology is well-suited to questions of “how many,” “how much,” and “to what extent.”

Key features of quantitative research

Quantitative studies typically involve large, randomly selected samples to ensure findings are representative of a broader population. Data is gathered using structured tools – questionnaires with closed-ended questions, rating scales, or existing datasets – and then analyzed through statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, correlation, regression, or ANOVA. A defining strength of this approach is replicability: because the methods are standardized, other researchers can repeat the study and test whether the same results emerge. Quantitative findings also carry considerable weight in policy discussions, since statistics and measurable outcomes are often persuasive to decision-makers and institutional audiences.

Limitations to keep in mind

Quantitative methods are powerful for establishing patterns and testing hypotheses, but they can miss the complexity behind the numbers. As one review published in the International Journal of Academic Multidisciplinary Research points out, things that can be measured gain scientific credibility – but the extent, severity, and human impact of social phenomena cannot always be satisfactorily captured by quantitative research alone.

Mixed methods: combining both approaches

Increasingly, researchers in social sciences are turning to mixed methods – combining qualitative and quantitative approaches within a single study to draw on the strengths of each. Mixed methods research combines qualitative and quantitative viewpoints, data collection, and analysis techniques with the broad purposes of breadth, depth of understanding, and corroboration. A practical example: a quantitative survey might reveal that a particular community has high rates of school dropout, while follow-up qualitative interviews explain the personal, economic, and cultural factors driving that trend. Neither approach alone could tell the full story.

There are also multi-method designs, which combine multiple qualitative or multiple quantitative approaches without mixing the two paradigms. And data triangulation – using multiple data sources or analytical approaches to verify findings – is another strategy for strengthening a study’s credibility. The choice of which approach to use should always be driven by the research question itself, not by methodological preference alone.

Survey methods in social science research

Surveys are among the most commonly used data collection tools in social science, bridging qualitative and quantitative approaches. Survey research is defined as the collection of information from a sample of individuals through their responses to questions, and it can use quantitative strategies (such as numerically rated questionnaire items), qualitative strategies (such as open-ended questions), or both. Surveys are particularly valued for their flexibility, scalability, and ability to generate quick profiles of large populations.

Types of survey instruments

Self-administered questionnaires are the most widely used format – respondents complete these independently, either on paper or online. They are cost-effective and can reach large numbers of people rapidly. Face-to-face interviews allow for deeper exploration and real-time clarification, making them preferable for complex or sensitive topics. Telephone interviews offer a middle ground – wider reach than in-person methods, but with some ability to probe and clarify. Online surveys via platforms such as Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, or Qualtrics have become increasingly standard, given their low cost, scalability, and ease of distribution. According to the Handbook of Survey Methodology for the Social Sciences (Springer), surveys are flexible in questioning techniques, the number of questions asked, and the topics covered – but designing a reliable survey requires far more rigor than simply drafting a list of questions.

Sampling and questionnaire design

Because surveying an entire population is rarely feasible, researchers work with samples – subsets of the population selected to be as representative as possible. The goal, as the National Institutes of Health’s Behavioral and Social Sciences research guide explains, is to use randomization not to control variables (as in experiments) but to select members of a sample so findings can be generalized to the wider population.

Questionnaire design is equally critical. Questions must be clearly worded, culturally appropriate, and free from leading language. A common design principle is to begin with neutral, easy-to-answer questions before moving to more complex or sensitive ones. For quantitative data, closed-ended questions using Likert scales or multiple-choice formats allow for straightforward statistical analysis. For qualitative depth, open-ended questions give respondents space to describe experiences in their own words. The sequencing, phrasing, and structure of questions all affect response quality and the validity of the data collected.

Presenting research findings

Collecting and analyzing data is only part of the research process. How you present your findings matters enormously – both for academic credibility and for reaching your intended audience. A well-structured research report does not just list results; it guides the reader through the logic of the study from start to finish.

The IMRaD structure

The most widely recognized format for presenting social science research is IMRaD – Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. The Introduction identifies the research problem, states the research question, and situates the study within existing literature. The Methods section describes precisely how the research was conducted, including the methodology chosen, the data collection tools, and the sample. The Results section presents the data objectively and factually, without interpretation. According to the USC Research Writing Guide, the results section arranges and describes findings in a logical sequence without bias, and findings can only support or challenge a hypothesis – they do not “prove” it. The Discussion section is where interpretation happens: you explain what the findings mean, connect them to existing theory and literature, address limitations, and suggest directions for future research.

Presenting qualitative vs. quantitative findings

Quantitative findings are typically presented using tables, graphs, and statistical summaries – visual tools that allow readers to quickly grasp patterns and comparisons. In qualitative social science research, the presentation is often more narrative in structure. As SciPub+ notes, qualitative findings are frequently organized thematically, supported by illustrative quotes from interviews or detailed descriptions from observations, with preliminary interpretation more integrated into the presentation than in quantitative reports.

Tailoring your presentation to your audience

Research findings must be disseminated thoughtfully. The University of Texas Arlington’s Foundations of Social Work Research resource describes dissemination as a planned process that considers target audiences and the settings in which findings will be received. Academic audiences expect detailed methodological discussion and engagement with existing scholarly literature. Policy audiences and practitioners are more interested in practical implications and actionable recommendations. General public audiences need accessible, jargon-free language and clear takeaways. Understanding who you are writing for will determine how technical, narrative, or visual your presentation should be.

Choosing the right methodology for your research project

There is no single “best” methodology in social science research. The right choice depends on your research question, your available resources, and the nature of the phenomenon you are studying. Questions asking “why” or “how” typically call for qualitative methods. Questions asking “how many” or “to what extent” generally require quantitative approaches. When you need both breadth and depth, a mixed-methods design is worth considering. Whatever you choose, the methodology must be explicitly justified in your research report – you need to explain not just what you did, but why that approach was most appropriate for your particular question.

It also helps to revisit the ethical dimensions of any methodology. Informed consent, confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and voluntary participation are not procedural formalities – they are foundational commitments that protect both your participants and the integrity of your research.
