Every piece of sociological knowledge we have today – whether it explains why people conform to social norms or how poverty persists across generations – started somewhere. It started with a question. But not all research questions are created equal. Some researchers want to understand why something happens in society. Others want to figure out what to do about it. This distinction sits at the heart of two fundamental approaches in sociological research: basic research and applied research. Understanding how these two types differ – and how they work together – is essential for anyone studying or working within the social sciences.

What is basic research in sociology?

Basic research, also called pure or fundamental research, is driven by intellectual curiosity. Its primary goal is to expand theoretical knowledge about social phenomena without any immediate concern for practical application. As the Illinois Institute of Technology’s research methods guide explains, basic research seeks to advance understanding of fundamental principles governing social life – and its benefits may not become apparent for years, decades, or even generations.

In sociology specifically, basic research focuses on questions like: How do social groups form and maintain identity? What causes social stratification? How does culture shape individual behavior? These are questions about the structure and logic of social life, not about fixing a particular problem right now.

Consider this example from Understanding Research Design in the Social Sciences: a sociologist studying whether there is an association between divorcing parents’ conflict and their children’s behavioral outcomes is doing basic research. The study is mapping a relationship and building foundational knowledge – it is not yet proposing an intervention or a solution.

Key characteristics of basic research

Basic research tends to be theory-focused and knowledge-driven. It typically produces findings published in academic journals, and it is often exploratory or descriptive in nature. According to research methods scholars, basic research in sociology commonly involves developing or refining theories of social interaction, group dynamics, and institutional behavior. The work is discipline-building – it advances the entire field’s conceptual toolkit, even when no immediate practical payoff is visible.

Funding for basic research typically comes from government agencies like the National Science Foundation, universities, and private foundations that support long-term scholarly inquiry. Results are measured by their theoretical contribution and scholarly impact, not by whether they immediately solve a social problem.

What is applied research in sociology?

Applied research takes a different starting point. Rather than beginning with curiosity about how society works in the abstract, applied sociological research begins with a specific, real-world problem that needs to be addressed. As Social Sci LibreTexts describes it, applied sociology uses information about society and social forces to solve social issues – working to diagnose conditions and measure interventions for change.

Applied researchers ask: Does this anti-poverty program actually reduce income inequality in urban areas? What strategies reduce gender discrimination in hiring? How can we decrease dropout rates in under-resourced schools? These are questions with a direct action orientation. The research is designed to produce findings that can be translated into policies, programs, or community interventions.

A concrete example: if a basic researcher establishes that parental conflict during divorce is associated with behavioral problems in children, an applied researcher then asks – does family counseling aimed at teaching healthy conflict resolution actually reduce those behavioral problems? The second question builds on the first but points toward a solution.

Applied sociology and social policy

One of the most significant outcomes of applied sociological research is its influence on public policy. Research on social inequality and educational attainment has repeatedly shown that race, class, and gender shape academic outcomes – and this body of work has directly informed policy pushes for equitable school funding and anti-discrimination reforms in education systems.

Applied sociology also drives changes in social programs. Work published in the Journal of the Society for Social Work and Research demonstrates how research on financial capability was translated into curricula tested in university degree programs and continuing education settings across multiple countries, including Singapore and China – a direct example of research findings being built into real institutional practice.

The policy connection is not automatic, of course. Sociologists like Thomas DiPrete and Brittany Fox-Williams have pointed out an imbalance in the field: sociology produces a great deal of research explaining the causes of inequality, but comparatively less research identifying feasible strategies for actually reducing it. This gap between explaining a problem and solving it is itself an argument for more robust applied research.

Key differences between basic and applied research

While both types use overlapping methods – surveys, interviews, ethnographic observation, focus groups – they differ significantly in purpose, scope, timeline, and how success is measured.

Purpose: Basic research is curiosity-driven and aimed at building theory. Applied research is solution-driven and aimed at addressing a defined problem. As Indeed’s career resource puts it, basic research focuses on the advancement of knowledge rather than solving a problem, while applied research directs its efforts toward finding a solution to a specific challenge.

Scope: Basic research is broad and general – it applies to wide-ranging phenomena across many contexts. Applied research is specific – it addresses one defined issue in a particular setting or population.

Timeline: Basic research operates on a long horizon. The insights it generates may only become practically useful years later. Applied research is typically conducted with more immediate timelines tied to decision-making needs, policy cycles, or program evaluations.

Evaluation criteria: Basic research is judged on theoretical rigor, novelty, and contribution to the academic literature. Applied research is judged on whether its findings actually work – whether the intervention reduced poverty, improved outcomes, changed behavior, or informed a workable policy.

Methods: Both rely on similar data collection tools, but they use them differently. According to ATLAS.ti’s research hub, basic research often uses exploratory and descriptive methods to gather broad insights, while applied research may rely more on experimental or evaluative designs to test whether specific interventions work in real-world settings.

How basic and applied research complement each other

It would be a mistake to treat basic and applied research as separate tracks that never meet. In practice, they are deeply interdependent. Basic research produces the theoretical frameworks and conceptual tools that applied researchers rely on when designing interventions. Without solid foundational knowledge about how social phenomena work, applied efforts risk being poorly targeted or theoretically incoherent.

Think of it this way: decades of basic sociological research established how social networks influence behavior and information spread. That foundational understanding then made it possible for applied researchers to design public health campaigns that use peer networks to promote healthy behaviors – work with direct real-world consequences.

The relationship also runs in reverse. Applied research frequently uncovers anomalies or unexpected findings that send researchers back to the theoretical drawing board. A program designed to reduce urban poverty may produce outcomes that challenge existing theories about social mobility, prompting new rounds of basic inquiry.

Research methods scholars describe this as a continuum rather than a binary. Many studies combine elements of both approaches – what is sometimes called “use-inspired basic research” – addressing fundamental theoretical questions while remaining attentive to practical applications. The distinction between basic and applied is best understood as a matter of primary orientation, not an absolute divide.

Why this distinction matters for sociologists

Understanding whether a study is basic or applied shapes nearly every decision a researcher makes – from how the study is designed, to where funding is sought, to how findings are reported and to whom. A basic researcher writes for an academic audience and measures success by citation impact. An applied researcher may write reports for government agencies, NGOs, or community organizations, measuring success by whether the findings are implemented and whether they produce change.

For students of sociology, this distinction is also practically important for career planning. Sociologists in academic settings often gravitate toward basic research – studying social groups, testing hypotheses, and building theory. Sociologists working in government, nonprofits, public health, or social services tend to engage in applied work, using research to directly address the conditions they encounter in their professional roles.

Neither orientation is inherently superior. Both are necessary. Basic research without applied follow-through risks producing knowledge that never reaches the people who need it. Applied research without a solid theoretical foundation risks producing interventions that misdiagnose the problem. The strength of sociology as a discipline comes from maintaining both – the careful, patient work of understanding society, and the urgent, practical work of improving it.
