How do societies change over time? What drives a community of scattered hunter-gatherers to eventually build cities, legal systems, and global economies? These are among the oldest questions in social science, and the evolutionary method offers one of the most systematic frameworks for answering them. Rooted in Darwin’s theory of natural selection and extended into the realm of human society, this research approach treats social change not as random or chaotic, but as a cumulative, directional process – one where small shifts accumulate over time to produce profound transformations.

What is the evolutionary method?

The evolutionary method in social research is a theoretical framework that studies how societies transform from simpler to more complex forms over extended periods. According to evolutionary theory, societies move in specific directions, progressing through identifiable stages of development. The key premise is that this change is not sudden or dramatic – it is gradual, continuous, and cumulative. Minor modifications in technology, norms, institutions, or economic arrangements accumulate over generations, eventually producing a fundamentally different kind of society.

The method asks researchers to take the long view. Rather than studying a society at a single point in time, it traces the arc of change across decades, centuries, or even millennia. This makes it particularly useful for understanding large-scale phenomena: the rise of the state, the shift from agrarian to industrial economies, the transformation of family structures, or the evolution of legal and educational systems.

Darwinian roots: from biology to society

The evolutionary method draws directly from Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking work on biological evolution. Darwin’s theory of organic evolution – which explained how species change through small, cumulative adaptations selected by the environment – gave social scientists a powerful template. If species could transform over time through incremental variation and selection, could societies not do the same?

Early sociologists were quick to apply this logic. Auguste Comte believed that human societies evolve in a unilinear way, progressing through three stages of thought: the theological, the metaphysical, and the positive (scientific). Émile Durkheim saw societies moving from simple, undifferentiated structures to complex, specialized ones. For these thinkers, social change was not random – it was directional and, in their view, progressive.

Herbert Spencer and the social organism

No figure did more to bridge Darwin’s biology and social theory than Herbert Spencer. Spencer conceptualized society as a “social organism” that evolved from a simpler state to a more complex one, following what he believed to be a universal law of evolution. He observed that just as biological organisms grow from undifferentiated cells into complex bodies with specialized organs, societies develop from small, homogeneous communities into large, differentiated systems with specialized institutions – governments, markets, schools, hospitals, and so on.

Spencer also coined the phrase “survival of the fittest” to describe the competitive pressures that shape both biological and social evolution. Spencer proposed that social evolution mirrors biological evolution, suggesting that societies and individuals that adapt most successfully to their environments are those that endure and flourish. While this idea had enormous influence in the 19th century, it also generated serious controversy – a point we return to below.

Spencer’s theory held that humanity evolves from a relatively undifferentiated society to a dynamic, differentiated one where structures and functions transform to meet changing needs. His framework became the foundation of what is now called Social Darwinism, and it shaped public discourse, policy thinking, and sociological research for decades.

Core principles of the evolutionary method

Regardless of the specific thinker, the evolutionary method in social research rests on a few core principles:

Gradual, cumulative change: Social transformation is rarely the product of a single event. Instead, it results from the slow accumulation of many small changes – in technology, norms, institutions, and ideas. A legal system does not appear overnight; it grows through centuries of incremental reform.

Movement from simple to complex: Sociocultural evolutionary theory holds that an evolution-like process leads to social progress, with societies generally moving from simple, undifferentiated forms to more complex, specialized structures. The family, for instance, once served reproductive, economic, educational, and social functions simultaneously. Over time, many of these functions have been transferred to specialized institutions – schools, banks, hospitals, social services.

Adaptation to the environment: Societies, like organisms, must adapt to survive. New technologies, climate changes, contact with other cultures, and economic pressures all force adjustments. Those adjustments that improve a society’s functioning tend to persist; those that do not are discarded or replaced.

Continuity across time: The evolutionary method emphasizes that each stage of social development builds on the one before it. Present institutions carry the imprint of past forms. Understanding where a society is today requires understanding where it has been.

Unilinear vs. multilinear evolution

Early proponents of the evolutionary method – Comte, Spencer, Lewis Henry Morgan – assumed that all societies follow the same developmental path. Unilinear evolutionary theories maintain that all societies pass through the same sequence of stages to reach the same destiny. Morgan, for example, proposed three universal stages: savagery, barbarism, and civilization – distinguished primarily by technological milestones such as the use of fire, agriculture, and writing.

This framework, however, proved deeply problematic. Theories of unilinear evolution were heavily criticized as racist – they ranked non-Western societies as “less evolved” and treated Western industrial civilization as the universal standard of progress. Anthropologist Franz Boas and his students challenged this view rigorously, arguing that each society has its own history and context, and that no culture should be judged as “primitive” or “advanced” on a single scale.

By the mid-20th century, multilinear evolutionary theory had largely replaced the unilinear model. Mid-century anthropologists including Leslie White, Julian Steward, and Marshall Sahlins rejected universal stages, instead conceptualizing cultural evolution as a process consisting of a number of forward paths of different styles and lengths. In this view, societies evolve in response to their specific environments, resources, and histories – not along a single predetermined track. Contemporary social evolutionists like Gerhard Lenski view social change as multilinear rather than unilinear, recognizing that evolutionary development is understood in terms of probabilities rather than inevitabilities.

Applying the evolutionary method in social research

In practice, researchers using the evolutionary method examine historical data to identify long-term patterns of change. They compare societies at different stages of development – or the same society at different points in time – to understand how institutions, norms, and structures have transformed. The method is particularly well-suited to studying:

Institutional development: How did marriage evolve from an economic arrangement into a companionate partnership? How did the modern state emerge from feudal political structures? The evolutionary method traces these changes step by step.

Technological and economic shifts: The transition from agrarian to industrial society did not happen in a single generation. It was the product of centuries of incremental developments in tool-making, energy use, trade, and organization. Evolutionary researchers map these gradual shifts to understand their cumulative impact.

Cultural and normative change: Attitudes toward gender, race, religion, and authority change over time. The evolutionary method helps researchers identify the direction and pace of these changes, and the social forces driving them.

After long neglect, evolutionary thinking is receiving new emphasis in the social sciences, with researchers now drawing on concepts of variation, selection, and transmission to explain how cultural and social forms emerge, persist, and change. The rise of computational methods, network analysis, and large-scale historical databases has given the evolutionary method new analytical power.

Strengths and limitations

The evolutionary method has genuine strengths. It forces researchers to think at the scale of decades and centuries rather than snapshots. It highlights the cumulative, interconnected nature of social change. And it provides a framework for cross-cultural comparison – asking not just what a society is, but where it has come from and where it might be heading.

But its limitations are equally important to acknowledge. Early versions of evolutionary theory were heavily ethnocentric, using Western industrial societies as the standard against which all others were measured. The assumption that change always means progress is empirically questionable – social transformations can bring harm as well as benefit. Evolutionary theories can oversimplify the complexities of social change by presenting it as a linear progression, and they can fail to account for human agency, historical accidents, and the role of power in shaping social outcomes.

Evolutionary analysis involves a different conception of how systems work – process-based rather than number or narrative-based – which can make it difficult to reconcile with other mainstream sociological methods. Modern researchers increasingly work to combine evolutionary insights with historical analysis, structural approaches, and attention to human agency, producing more nuanced accounts of how societies change.

Why the evolutionary method still matters

Despite its contested history, the evolutionary method remains a valuable tool in social research. It reminds us that the institutions, norms, and structures we take for granted today are the products of long historical processes – not fixed or inevitable, but contingent, evolving, and subject to further change. In sociology’s formative period, evolutionary analysis organized much theorizing and research, and its revival in more sophisticated forms continues to open new avenues for understanding how human societies have developed and continue to transform.

The insight at the core of the method – that significant social change is often the cumulative result of many small changes over time – is as relevant now as it was in Darwin’s day. Whether we are studying the slow spread of democratic norms, the gradual transformation of family structures, or the incremental adoption of new technologies, the evolutionary method asks us to look beyond the moment and trace the long arc of change.
