Every field of knowledge – from biology to physics to sociology – relies on a shared vocabulary. But these aren’t just ordinary words. Over time, specific words shed their everyday meanings and take on precise, technical significance within a discipline. When that happens, a word becomes a concept. Understanding how this transformation occurs, and why it matters for building scientific knowledge, is fundamental to grasping how any science – including the science of society – actually works.

What is a concept, exactly?

In everyday speech, we use words loosely. “Power,” “role,” “class,” “identity” – these words carry familiar, general meanings. But in science, the same words are sharpened into tools. A concept is an abstract idea or mental construct that represents a category, class, or phenomenon in the social world. It provides a framework for organizing, classifying, and analyzing complex phenomena systematically. Crucially, a concept isn’t the thing itself – it’s a mental representation of it, a label we use to capture something real in a way that others can understand and work with.

This distinction between a word and a concept is important. The word “force” exists in everyday language – we talk about forcing a door open. But in physics, force has a precise definition: mass multiplied by acceleration. Once a word acquires that kind of precision and shared scientific meaning, it has crossed the threshold into becoming a concept.

How ordinary words become scientific concepts

The process through which words become concepts is not random. Scientists frequently introduce new names for novel concepts or discoveries – every time a new phenomenon, particle, material, or device is identified, researchers coin a term to describe it. Sometimes entirely new words are invented. In physics, terms like quark, lepton, and neutrino were coined to name newly discovered particles. In chemistry, elements received names as they were isolated and identified.

But more often, existing words are borrowed and redefined. The word “cell” in biology is a good example – it originally referred to a small room or compartment. When early microscopists observed the basic structural units of living organisms, the resemblance to small enclosed spaces led them to borrow the word. Today, cell in biology has a precise, non-negotiable meaning entirely distinct from its everyday use. Similarly, cohesion in physics refers specifically to the intermolecular force that holds together the molecules in a solid or liquid – a far more specific meaning than what most people associate with the word in conversation.

Scientific vocabulary can be divided into tiers: subject-specific words or technical terminology (like “electromagnetism” or “photovoltaic”) used only within a discipline, versus common words used with a special meaning according to the subject they appear in. Both types are concepts, but the second type is often harder to master – because the word is familiar, learners can mistake their everyday understanding for the technical one.

Concepts in natural sciences: from biology to physics

The natural sciences provide some of the clearest illustrations of how concepts function in scientific inquiry. In biology, a term like natural selection does not simply mean “nature choosing things.” It describes a specific mechanism – differential reproductive success based on heritable traits – that explains evolutionary change. The concept integrates observations about variation, inheritance, and survival into a single, powerful analytical tool.

In chemistry, valence describes the combining capacity of an element, a concept that emerged from experiments on how elements bond and react. Once established, the concept of valence allowed chemists to predict the behavior of compounds before testing them. That predictive power is one of the hallmarks of a well-formed scientific concept.

In physics, entropy began as a thermodynamic concept describing the tendency of systems toward disorder, and has since extended into information theory and cosmology. This evolution illustrates a key feature of scientific concepts: a framework for defining scientific concepts must address comprehensiveness, precision, consistency, and circularity – and when those conditions are met, concepts can travel across disciplines and still retain their analytical usefulness.

The abstract nature of concepts

One of the defining features of scientific concepts is their abstraction. Abstract concepts involve ideas or qualities that are not tangible and cannot be directly observed – think of “freedom,” “force,” or “social class.” The process of arriving at these abstractions involves observation, generalization, and discrimination – recognizing what different instances share while filtering out irrelevant differences.

Abstraction is not a weakness; it is a strength. Concepts are abstract in that they omit the differences of the things in their extension, treating them as if they were identical – which is precisely what makes them useful for comparison and generalization. A physicist working with the concept of “mass” doesn’t need to account for the color or texture of an object. The abstraction isolates what matters for the analysis at hand.

Abstract concepts are characterized by different degrees of sensorimotor, interoceptive, emotional, linguistic, and social aspects – and this is especially true in the social sciences, where concepts like “inequality” or “socialization” cannot be directly measured with instruments but must be operationalized through indicators that make them empirically traceable.

Concepts in sociology: giving precision to social life

Sociology deals with phenomena that are inherently more complex and contested than atoms or molecules. Social life involves meaning, interpretation, power, and change. This makes conceptual clarity not just helpful but essential. Theories are built from concepts. Most generally, concepts denote phenomena; in so doing, they isolate features of the world that are considered, for the moment at hand, important. Familiar sociological concepts would include production, power, interaction, norm, role, status, and socialization.

Take the concept of role. In everyday speech, a role is something an actor plays. In sociology, “role” refers to the set of expected behaviors, obligations, and norms attached to a particular social position – a teacher, a parent, a judge. The concept allows sociologists to analyze how social positions shape behavior independently of the individuals who occupy them. Similarly, socialization isn’t just the informal process of getting along with others. It describes the systematic process through which individuals internalize the norms, values, and behaviors appropriate to their society – a concept central to understanding how societies reproduce themselves across generations.

Sociological concepts also describe relationships between people and groups. The concept of a dyadic relationship, for instance, refers to a two-person interaction – the smallest possible social unit. From such foundational concepts, more complex structures can be built and analyzed.

From concepts to theory: the steps involved

Concepts on their own are not theories. They become theoretically useful when they are connected to other concepts through propositions – statements about how concepts relate to one another. At its most basic level, a theory is a proposed relationship between two or more concepts. Ultimately, a theory seeks to explain why a phenomenon occurs.

The steps from concept to theory follow a recognizable logic. First, concepts must be clearly defined – their meaning and boundaries specified. Second, relationships between concepts must be identified: does one cause or influence another? Third, these relationships must be organized into a coherent framework that can generate hypotheses capable of being tested against empirical evidence. Theories are systematic in nature, providing a structured framework for organizing and synthesizing empirical evidence and observations, and they carry explanatory and predictive power that isolated concepts alone cannot provide.

Émile Durkheim’s work on suicide illustrates this perfectly. Suicide on its own is a fact – a measurable event. But Durkheim connected it to the concept of social integration, proposing that the degree to which individuals are bound to their social group influences their likelihood of self-destruction. This conceptual connection became a theory – one that made predictions, could be tested with data, and opened entirely new ways of understanding individual behavior as a social phenomenon.

Why conceptual clarity matters for scientific analysis

Poor concepts lead to poor theories. When concepts are vague, imprecise, or differently understood by different researchers, the knowledge built upon them becomes unreliable. This is why concepts are defined by clear and precise definitions that specify their meaning and boundaries, distinguishing them from other concepts – and are often operationalized into measurable variables so they can be tested empirically.

This challenge is sharper in the social sciences than in the natural sciences. The concept of race, for example, was long treated as a biological category in both popular understanding and scientific research. As sociological inquiry deepened, it became clear that race functions primarily as a social construct shaped by historical, cultural, and political forces rather than by biology. Refining the concept changed not just the terminology but the entire analytical framework built around it – and with it, the kinds of questions researchers could meaningfully ask.

This dynamic quality of concepts is not a flaw but a feature. Scientific knowledge advances precisely because concepts are revised in light of new evidence and new social realities. Empirical researchers tend to draw concepts from social theory, often piecemeal, to elaborate and give greater significance to their interpretations of data – a reminder that concepts and theories exist in a continuous, mutually reinforcing dialogue rather than a fixed hierarchy.

Can social science match natural science in conceptual rigor?

A long-standing debate in the philosophy of science concerns whether the social sciences can or should adopt the same methods and conceptual standards as the natural sciences. Sociology is based on the scientific research tradition which emphasizes two key components: empirical observation and the logical construction of theories and propositions. This places it squarely within the scientific tradition, even if the phenomena it studies – human behavior, meaning, culture – resist the kind of controlled experimentation available to physicists or chemists.

The social constructionist perspective adds another layer to this debate. The social constructionist framework posits that “truth” varies – it is different based on who you ask, and people change their definitions of truth based on their interactions with others. For sociologists, this means that the very concepts used to study society are themselves shaped by social processes – a reflexivity that natural scientists rarely need to contend with in the same way.

This does not make social science less rigorous. It makes conceptual clarity even more important. When the objects of study include power, identity, inequality, and culture, the precision with which concepts are defined directly determines the quality of the analysis that follows. Concepts guide thoughts and behaviors – so it is important to understand both the nature of those concepts and how people construct them. This applies as much to the sociologist building a theory as it does to the individuals whose social world that theory seeks to explain.
